pantry

Getting started

Set up pantry

Run the server once, then add your devices. It takes about ten minutes.

Already have a pantry server? Ask its admin for an invite code, then start at step 3.

The server

  1. Run pantryd

Any Linux machine with systemd that your devices can reach. Download pantryd, then on the server:

    tar xf pantryd-0.1.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz
    cd pantryd-0.1.0
    sudo ./install.sh --listen 192.168.1.10:7710

This creates the pantry user, the server's key and the pantryd service. Its data lives in /var/lib/pantry. To update later, run the installer of the newer version. It backs up the database first.

  2. Name it and add yourself

pantry-admin address 192.168.1.10 # where devices reach the server
pantry-admin name home # what devices call it
    pantry-admin user add alice --admin

The last command prints an invite code for your first device. It works once, within 24 hours.

Your devices

  1. Install the apps

Get them from the download page.

    Windows

Run the setup. It installs for your user, with Start menu shortcuts. Remove it under Settings, Apps.

    Ubuntu, Debian, Mint

Open the .deb to install it from the software centre, or:

    sudo apt install ./pantry_0.1.0_amd64.deb

Remove it with sudo apt remove pantry.

    Other Linux

The install script puts the apps into ~/.local, with launcher entries and icons. Run it again to update.

    curl -fsSL https://pantry.pschulz.at/install.sh | sh

    To remove the apps:

    curl -fsSL https://pantry.pschulz.at/install.sh | sh -s -- --uninstall

Removing the apps keeps your data.

  2. Join with the invite code

Open pantry hub, go to Server, and choose Join with an invite code. Or in a terminal:

    pantry join CODE laptop

The code carries the server's address and key, so the device trusts the right server from the start.

  3. Create your vault

Open pantry pass and choose a master password. It never leaves your devices and nobody can reset it, so keep it somewhere safe. To bring your logins over, import them from Bitwarden or KeePass.

  4. Add Brave autofill

In pantry pass, open Settings, Browsers, Set up…. It installs the extension's files and walks you through loading it in Brave (developer mode, “Load unpacked”).

  5. More devices and people

On a device that is already set up, go to pantry hub, Server, Invite a device, or run pantry invite. On the new device, do steps 3 and 4 with that code, then unlock pantry pass with the same master password.

Other people get their own invite code from an admin: pantry-admin user add NAME.
